Press Release – Celebrating Older Americans Month: Flip the script on aging
April 30, 2025
Each May, Older Americans Month (OAM) shines a spotlight on the valuable contributions of older adults while reinforcing the importance of community support and inclusion. The 2025 national theme, “Flip the Script on Aging,” invites everyone to challenge stereotypes and celebrate aging as a time of growth, purpose, and possibility.
Hosted by the Administration for Community Living (ACL), OAM 2025 encourages individuals, organizations, and communities to examine the language and assumptions we often use when talking about older adults. Words have power, and small changes in the way we speak can make a big difference.
Instead of saying, “She still drives,” consider simply saying, “She drives.” That small shift removes the suggestion that driving at her age is unusual. And phrases like “senior moment” can unfairly reinforce the idea that aging automatically means cognitive decline—when forgetfulness is something people of all ages experience.
Throughout May, our agency, Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington, will be encouraging individuals to Flip the Script on Aging! Whether it’s pursuing a new passion, volunteering, or mentoring the next generation, older adults are continuing to redefine what aging looks like.
Community members are encouraged to:
- Share photos and stories on social media that showcase aging as an opportunity—not a limitation.
- Use hashtags like #FlipTheScriptOnAging, #OAM2025, and #OlderAmericansMonth2025 to amplify the movement.
- Explore local programs offered through our agency, including caregiver support, nutrition services, and healthy aging workshops.
To learn more about how our agency supports older adults and adults living with disabilities in our community, peruse our website or call our Community Living Connections helpline at (509) 960-7281. For more information about OAM, visit the official ACL website and follow them on X, Facebook, and LinkedIn.
Let’s celebrate aging—and flip the script together!
