Press release – Take action this April for Global Volunteer Month
April 3, 2025
As the seasons change and the days grow longer, there’s no better time to embrace new opportunities to give back. This Global Volunteer Month, Aging & Long Term Care of Eastern Washington (ALTCEW) is calling on community members to spring into action and make a lasting impact in the lives of older adults and adults living with disabilities.
Volunteers are the heart of our work, providing essential services that foster connection, support independence, and strengthen our communities across Spokane, Whitman, northern Ferry, Stevens, and Pend Oreille counties.
“Volunteers play a vital role at Aging & Long Term Care, and we are always in need of compassionate individuals to help us serve the aging population in our region,” said Kari Stevens, Community Living Connections Director. “Every act of service—big or small—creates a ripple effect of kindness and support.”
Ways to Get Involved – Whether you have an hour a week or a few hours a month, there’s a volunteer opportunity for you:
- A Matter of Balance (MOB) – Help adults reduce fall risks and stay active with this evidence-based program.
- Check and Connect – Combat isolation by making scheduled phone calls to older adults, offering a friendly voice and peace of mind.
- Planning & Management Council (PMC) – Advocate for aging and disability issues by joining this advisory group.
- Dementia Friends (DF) Champion – Help build a dementia-friendly region by raising awareness and leading information sessions.
- Statewide Health Insurance Benefits Advisors (SHIBA) – Assist people in navigating Medicare, ensuring they understand their coverage options.
Giving back isn’t just about helping others—it’s about finding purpose, building connections, and boosting well-being. Volunteering has been shown to reduce stress, combat loneliness, and increase confidence. But don’t just take our word for it—hear from our volunteers:
- MOB: “The MOB classes are excellent ways to meet other folks facing similar challenges with an aging body and learning what others are doing to improve their lives.”
- Check and Connect: “It has been a great way to reach out and help lift up the community during some especially trying times. It was easy to get connected and stay involved since everything is done over the phone.”
- PMC: “Volunteering for the PMC has been a joy for me. We are a large group representing the five counties that make up ALTCEW’s service area. I encourage others to apply to join this diverse and deeply caring group.”
- DF: “Volunteering provides an opportunity to make a positive impact in our community and to help people living with memory loss while knowing that your efforts are directly contributing to improving the lives of others.”
- SHIBA: “I believe that helping others to understand Medicare insurance options is important for the health and well-being of those that are eligible or their caregivers.”
