Spokane Area Dementia Friendly Community

Spokane is an official member of the Dementia Friendly America community!

Aging & Long Term Care has partnered with the Washington State Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association and Providence Health & Services (including Providence ElderPlace Adult Day Health, Providence Holy Family Hospital, and Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center) to become a member of the Dementia Friendly America (DFA) network. Additional community partners and family care partners supporting people living with dementia (PLWD) strengthen this community-based effort.

A dementia friendly community is a town, city, or county that is respectful toward and informed about individuals with the disease, their families, and their caregivers, and offers support that fosters quality of life. Joining DFA means a community is engaging in a process to become more dementia friendly.

It is predicted that the number of Washingtonians living with dementia will continue to increase. Our community needs to collaborate to make our city a better place for people living with dementia.

Engaging With our Community

The Spokane Area Dementia Friendly Community (DFC) conducted a Dementia Community Needs Assessment survey in the autumn of 2020. The goal of this survey was to analyze Spokane County’s needs when it comes to improving the lives of people living with dementia and their care partners, determine the issues stakeholders are motivated to act on, then set community goals. To learn more about our findings from this survey, please watch the video below or read the executive summary.

Following the survey, in April 2021, the Spokane Area DFC brought these results in detail to community stakeholders via an online community forum. Here individuals discussed the top three priority areas that arose through the survey. The information gathered from this event was compiled into a report, please click here to read. This report will now be used to create a community wide action plan. More information about this action plan will be released upon completion.

Become a Dementia Friend

Dementia Friends USA is part of a global movement that is changing the way people think, act, and talk about dementia. Anyone can be a Dementia Friend – we all have a part to play in creating dementia friendly communities!

A Dementia Friend is someone who, through viewing a series of online videos or attending a live interactive session, learns about what it’s like to live with dementia and then turns that understanding into action. From telling friends about the Dementia Friends program to visiting someone who is living with dementia, every action counts!

You can become a Dementia Friend by joining us for a one hour information session and committing to take action.  Do you have a book group, neighborhood or church group that would like to participate together in an information session?  We are happy to work with you.  Contact us for more information at dementia@altcew.org.
